	来自于 uncle (Dāvangere, India) 2009 5月 7日从: 2009年04月01日, 智慧果: 1537 Ex-IITian unveils model to save water Vivek Narayanan \| TNN Chennai: A slight tweak in coach design could help the Railways save several million litres of water that is flushed down the wash basins of coaches everyday. An IIT Madras alumnus has come up with an idea to help the Railways save and reuse the water used in trains. Prakash Vaidyanathan, the IIT-M alumnus, says: “There are six wash basins in each compartment and the used water falls on the tracks. Outlet pipes from the basins can be inter-connected to enable water to collect in a tank.’’ “When the train reaches the final station, the container can be removed and the water recycled. It can then be used again in trains, to flush toilets or to wash railway platforms. This will help reduce the railways expense in buying water,’’ says Prakash. According to Prakash, at least one litre of water is wasted by a passenger. In a journey, to and fro, about 150 litres are wasted by 70-odd passengers in each compartment. He says that 7.4 million litres can be saved in trains every day, and 3.245 billion litres in a year. “Usually, water is refilled at different stations. The money spent on procuring water can be saved if the waste water is recyled. When I conveyed the idea to PK Tiwari, director of carriage works, Indian Railways, he appreciated it and called me to Lucknow. Southern Railway officials are also interested in my idea,’’ says Prakash. Prakash has another idea as well to install small wind turbines on trains. The collected water can be pumped to the recycling station rather than transferring it manually. This can be done using wind energy stored in batteries, which can be used to run the pump instead of electricity from the grid, he says. He adds that he does not have the money to bring out do the prototype of the model and will be happy if the railways takes up his idea.	举报
